AFCON 2023: Where, how to watch Africa Cup of Nations
Nine days remain until the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, or AFCON, and it's crucial to know where and how to watch the competition. Whether or whether Africans and people everywhere else will be able to see their favorite teams and players on television is still up in the air.
Unlike past tournament editions, Multichoice, the largest satellite TV provider in Africa, stated on Wednesday that the AFCON 2023 will not be broadcast on its SuperSport networks. This decision surprised many football fans, who were left wondering what alternative ways there were to follow the tournament without physically being at the match venues.
New TV Rights Agreement with CAF. The Confederation of African Football, or CAF, granted Togo-based satellite TV New World TV the broadcasting rights to all CAF competitions and events in November 2023. NWTV will be the exclusive broadcaster of all CAF competitions from 2023 to 2025, in both paid and free-to-air formats. Sub-Saharan Africa will be covered in 46 countries.
Patrice Motsepe, the president of CAF, confirmed the agreement and called it a "mega deal" that no other broadcaster could match.
The CAF president declared, "The Media Rights Agreement with New World TV is the biggest investment by a Pan-African broadcaster in CAF's history." Motsepe went on, "We are really delighted to work with such a globally recognized and cutting-edge broadcasting organization that has quickly adjusted to the shifting needs and viewing habits of the contemporary football audience. "New World TV's robust collaborations with multiple mobile operators and its television networks are also bringing innovative approaches to the consumption of video content."
Where to watch AFCON 2023
New World TV, owners of the exclusive rights, will take charge of broadcasting the tournament to a wide range of countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
Free-to-air stations: Nigeria Television Authority and other free-to-air channels in Nigeria can secure license from NWTV to broadcast matches to the teeming audience in the country.
However, at the time of this report, it is unclear if these stations have secured licenses. Also, StarTimes subscribers will have access to all 52 matches of the AFCON 2023.
